[Intro]
I'm coming back
Hey yeah, I'm comin'
I'm coming back
Hey yeah, I'm comin'
[Verse 1: Domo Genesis]
It's a cold world baby, but I'm a cold nigga
Frostbite tryna take a chew of how I slither
My presence give 'em chills, like an Antarctica winter
And I'm banging Inglewood till I'm getting caught with a splinter
I'm having artists for dinner
So many fall apart when I spark it's hard to remember
It's always hard remembering pain is part of the riddle
Somewhere between my art and the dark, I'm parked in the middle
I knew my part since was little
I knew my heart was official
I knew that in my heart that boy was part of a bigger plan
I know my momma not coming up short of rent again
Cause I put this rap shit down and go and sin again
Fuck all the daps and pounds I'm on my shit again
All that bad mouthing just running up my adrenaline
And yeah, it's safe to say we made a way
From getting slouched on
And Doms'll be that nigga from now on, you dig me?
[Hook 1: Mac Miller]
Nothing to do, except smoke and drive
Twenty in your pocket, million on your mind
And someone had the drink, someone had the drug
Someone had bitches on the line, that's what it was
And I don't regret a single night I came home fucked up
Ain't sorry for a single time I made hoes cry
Money was a thing I didn't make too much of
Tell me 'Hurry up', Imma take my time
[Hook 2: Domo Genesis]
I feel like I'm designed for this
I don't know how all my timing is
But I know I want that time again
To give this all I got
[Verse 2: Domo Genesis]
All my clouds got silver linings
Amazing how I keep my peace alive through all this violence
It's a war outside my window, it's like all I hear is sirens
But it's something 'bout the melody, I'm drifting into science
I was born hateful, looking at this world ugly
Way at the bottom, got me questioning if God love me
You know my steez dog, real niggas ride gully
Lost a couple soldiers, got me smokey with my eyes runny
My heart cold like I said in the first verse
And I'm tryna eat, you niggas eyein' dessert first
And somewhere between the hoes and money, I got hurt
The worst, I swear to God this life a gift and a curse
My path was chosen way before I existed, the misfit
The voices in my head never tell me wrong so I listen
Either make a way or collision
I ain't here to play nigga, I'm on a mission
[Hook 1: Mac Miller]
Nothing to do, except smoke and drive
Twenty in your pocket, million on your mind
And someone had the drink, someone had the drug
Someone had bitches on the line, that's what it was
And I don't regret a single night I came home fucked up

Domo Genesis Dapper
As the Odd Future collective has become a fractured mess, it’s been fascinating to see what each MC, producer and performer can manage on their own. Tyler, The Creator still acts like he’s twelve, bragging about pushing grandmas over and having make-out seshes in the back of his Beamer. His former business partner and the “messiah” of the group, Earl Sweatshirt, bailed to focus on his own issues. At this point, he’s basically an agoraphobe and a curmudgeon, grumpy far beyond his years. Hence I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside. And The Internet coasted under the radar, dropping one of the most original neo-soul albums of 2015. But Domo Genesis hasn’t done much except drop a few Dragonball Z freestyles and probably smoke way too much weed on his couch. Somewhere along the line, he had an epiphany. Domo realized no one wants another stoned party rapper a la Wiz Khalifa. No one cares about a long lost member of a collective that peaked about five years ago.
Alas, Domo Genesis has finally released his major debut, probably two or years after most people stopped caring about him. The saddest thing is that it’s actually incredibly solid. Standing at just 42 minutes, it’s a fairly quick listen. And if you cut out the album’s weakest link, “Go (Gas)”, it’s a surprisingly consistent debut with a sleek, R&B/soul flair.
On this release, Domo Genesis makes a few changes. Rather than rapping in his typical lethargic manner, Domo utilizes a type of sing-rap fusion, which he manages to pull off quite well. And he actually tackles a few personal topics – his antisocial tendencies, his relationship with his mom and even his purpose in life. It’s clear that Doms has been doing his fair share of thinking. And it’s really a refreshing change of pace for an artist who typically places style far above substance. Instead of just bragging or rapping about his love for weed, women and alcohol, he actually tries to say something meaningful for once.

He still relies heavily on the production though, which is dominated by a glossy, soul-driven sound, apparent on Anderson Paak’s Malibu and Snoop Dogg’s Bush. And while this style is entertaining, catchy and lovable, it’s not bound to age gracefully. Check out out any Pharrell-produced album from the last few years and you’ll notice they age quite quickly.

Despite some weaknesses, Genesis has some very strong tracks. “Dapper” in particular is incredibly happy-go-lucky and both “My Own” and “Coming Back” are surprisingly solid. Domo has honed his craft, updating his formula to become more soul than hip-hop. Tomb raider angel of darkness password to crack. And while that helps the atmosphere, it makes it harder and harder to actually pay attention to Domo’s lyrics. He blends in, basically filling the gaps in the production instead of shining through as a lyricist. He serves his purpose, making the songs catchier and not distracting the audiences from the album’s grooves. Not a bad thing in the slightest but if you’re expecting something deep or philosophical, this is an album that you should skip.
In a weird way, Domo Genesis is an artist I’ll never really be that disappointed in. He doesn’t make anything complex or political and I never expect him to. He just makes fun-loving, upbeat music without much of a message. That’s not a knock on Domo – sometimes a simple relaxing melody is all that’s needed to unwind at the end of a long day. That’s the beauty of Genesis… Domo recognized his dwindling popularity and polished his sound to keep up with the times. All the while, he kept his head low, still appealing to an audience who’s followed him for his seven year career. While the passionate, hungry Doms from No Idols was a nice change of pace, this is the Domo Genesis I signed up for.
